Lawns - The best tips to maintaining yours

Living in a rental property with lawns and gardens is a perfect way to add outdoor spaces to your lifestyle however, if you do choose to rent a property with these spaces, it is important to be aware of the requirements around maintenance.

If you don’t have a green thumb and would prefer to outsource the task, there are a range of trades available to help make this chore easier and take care of the responsibility to ensure that you stay on top of it.

Regular mowing and edging

The frequency of lawns maintenance will be dependent on the season. In wetter and warmer weather, lawns and edges can grow at a faster pace while slowing in summer. In drier weather you may find that the grass does not grow as frequently.

When mowing check the height of your lawn mower and make sure that you aren’t cutting the grass too short that it damages the roots, potentially leaving patches in the grass. If you employ a gardener, they can advise on the best care for your lawns and will usually attend fortnightly in summer and monthly in winter.

Fertilise and weed

From time to time your lawns and gardens may have weeds and can be treated with a weed killer to help keep them green and healthy. A slow-release liquid lawn fertiliser is also great to maintain the lawns and will provide extra nutrients especially in the drier months when water is scarce.

Your local garden centre or hardware store can help with advice on the best treatment for your lawns or your gardener can add this service in as part of their regular schedule.

Watering your lawns

In wetter months there is usually an abundance of moisture for your lawns and gardens to grow and they may grow much faster than usual requiring more regular maintenance. In drier and warmer months, ensure that you are watering at the cooler parts of the day to avoid damage to the grass and faster absorption of water into the root systems.

In drier months and in cases of water restrictions, conserving water is essential and using rainwater from tanks or recycled water can help keep the lawns healthy in addition to avoiding parking vehicles or walking on the grass.
